Wedding Speech Writing Tips

By Leroy Chan The wedding speech, when well thought out, rehearsed and properly delivered, could bring a wedding reception or dinner to life. A good wedding speech will entertain and make the guests feel great about being present for the celebration. Here are a few tips for writing your own wedding speech if you don’t have any idea what to say. Thank Anyone Important A wedding is an ideal occasion to thank many people. Name the people you want to give thanks to and why. For example, if you are the best man, you can thank the groom for being his best friend. If you are the bride, you can thank your parents for raising you to be independent and smart. Tell a Story People like to hear stories about other people. Say something you know about the person you will be talking about because you were also there when it happened, or even if you had only heard about it. For example, you and the groom went to the same college but attended lectures late, if at all in the mornings because you both played poker all night long. The groom won often and made enough to pay for one semester’s tuition. Give a History Lesson This is very similar to telling a story. Go over the significant milestones, if you are familiar with them, about this person, the bride or groom. That would include the schools they attended, the jobs they had or the hobbies they are in to. Disclose a Secret Everyone likes to hear and tell secrets. Say something no one knows about the person you will be talking about but may be surprised to find out. For example, tell the guests that the bride once auditioned for a popular television show. Or, that the groom had a crush on his third grade school teacher, who by the way is a guest tonight. Say Something Funny Any occasion would be fun if humor were part of it. If you can make people laugh with a funny story, everyone will feel like they are having a good time and enjoy themselves. You can’t force a laugh. However, the stories you tell or the situations you describe can end up getting a few guests chuckling without you trying to make it funny. Give Unsolicited Advice It’s customary for someone to give the newlyweds some advice. The most common is anything on marriage. If you are making a speech and you are married, you can share your wisdom on how to be a good spouse. A common advice is to resolve your argument before you both go to sleep. Another would be that the wife is always right. Although these examples are important, admittedly they have been over-used. What you can do, if you can’t think of advice that no one else has ever told, is to make these original or unique by describing how the advice has helped you in your own marriage. Reveal Your Feelings You can express your feelings about the people you will be talking about in your speech. If you are the father of the bride, tell your daughter how proud you are of her and that you will always be there for her. In addition, you can tell your new son-in-law how happy you are to have him as a new member of the family. Get the Audience Involved This idea is a bit unconventional and almost crosses into the job of the MC, however you might consider getting the audience involved by asking questions about the couple. You can ask about the craziest thing the couple has ever done. Or, you can ask about why they would make a good couple. You can come up with any opened ended question that requires some explaining. Some would be glad to participate just to be the life of the party. By doing this, you’ll loosen up the crowd and make the celebration all the more fun. You should consider it an honor and a privilege if asked to make a speech at a wedding reception. The newlywed’s family asked you because they trust you and have respect in you. Job Interviews and The Secret of Selling Yourself

By Bonnie Lowe A very effective and persuasive tactic when selling something is to promote its benefits as well as its features. Very simply, features are what something has; benefits are what those features do for you. For example, if youre selling your used Oldsmobile, one of the features you might mention is its large trunk. If you focus only on the feature, youll say, This car has a large trunk. (Yawn) But if you promote that feature with its benefit, you could say, The trunk is huge. You can get three suitcases and your golf bag in there for a trip to Disneyland and still have plenty of room for all the souvenirs youll want to bring home! See how that makes a more powerful impression? The potential buyer can visualize how this car with its large trunk can make packing for his next trip much easier. Use the same tactic for each feature of the car, and (Ka-ching!) you have a much quicker sale. Benefits: Ill keep track of your schedule so youll always be on time and have the materials you need; I will be able to quickly retrieve any document; I will prioritize my workload to ensure the most critical projects are don e first; I will save you time; Ill help you make your boss happy. Feature: Dedicated. Benefits: I will support the companys overall mission and do whatever I can to help achieve it; I wont complain about hard work or long hours; I will faithfully do my job to the best of my ability. Feature: Excellent Communicator. Benefits: I will easily be able to give you and your staff the information you and they need, whether in verbal or written form; I will be able to compose much of your correspondence, relieving you of that duty; I will save you time and effort. Feature: Administrator of the Year, 2003, Acme International Inc. Benefits: “Im very good at what I do, and you dont have to take my word for it heres proof that others have recognized my skill, professionalism, and outstanding contributions. Even more impressive! See how that works? A feature is nice. But even better is answering the hiring managers unspoken question, So why is that important? You do that by selling your benefits. Make a list of your own features and their corresponding benefits. Learn to promote these benefits to your potential employer. Marketing Myth #2: It Is Not Important To Know What You Don’t Know

By Mary Eule This is the most pervasive, far-reaching and detrimental marketing myth of them all! It is an equal-opportunity fantasy whose believers are corporate CEOs; entrepreneurs; male and female; young and old; rich and poor; tall and short; moms and pops; etc. It is also the most difficult one to correct because the patient doesnt know he/she is ill! It serves as the foundation for prejudice, ignorance and failure and influences all of the sufferers decisions and behaviors personally and professionally. Ironically, this myth often serves as the very basis for becoming an entrepreneur in the first place. Michael Gerber, in his classic book, The E-Myth, says that most small businesses are started by technicians (folks who are proficient at some skill) who have an entrepreneurial seizure. Just because they know how to do the work of the business does not mean that they know how to run a business that does that work. For example, just because a hair stylist knows how to cut hair, does not mean he/she can run a hair styling business. This is a classic case of not knowing what you dont know. For instance, any business run in the U.S. today has to understand how the following business requirements (just to name a few) impact them and how they must comply on a daily/monthly/yearly basis: Payroll taxes Workmens compensation Local and State Income Tax Laws Local and State Sales Tax Laws Business Licensing Profit and Loss Statements Overhead Expenses Financial Reporting Requirements Employee Management Human Resource Regulations OSHA Regulations Social Security, Medicare Benefits Withholding Taxes Actual costs of running a business Quarterly Tax Payments The problem arises when technicians assume that all they need to know is the work of the business, not how to run a business. The actual costs of owning and operating your own company are far greater than the expenses associated with your rent, office furniture, utilities, etc. Because of this many small business owners never earn a true profitone that allows their business to grow, and provide them sufficient income to enjoy the lifestyle they envisioned when they began. Essentially, theyve traded one job for another. Before they collected a paycheck, now they must earn a profit the two are not the same. They are responsible for paying themselves and well as all of their other business partners federal, state, city, and local governments; city municipalities; employees; suppliers, etc. Herein lays the trap Most entrepreneurs do not know what they dont know and go into their business thinking Im the best widget maker; therefore my business is bound to be successful! The person who knows WHY will always be his boss. Alanis Morissette Then there are a group of people that I call know-it-alls . The business world is full of these people, and unfortunately they are their own worst enemies. Why? There are a myriad of specific reasons but they all begin with their reluctance and/or refusal to seek wise counsel. Essentially, they do not believe that its smart business to pay experts for their years of study, experience and expertise. For instance, just because they can write their own ad copy (i.e. it doesnt require a license or certificate) they think they should! These are the very same folks who would diagnose their own diseases and write their own prescriptions if it werent against the law! What they fail to see is that for every one dollar they spend paying experts, they potentially save five dollars in actual money and even more in wasted time; preventable mistakes; lost earnings and stress. However, marketing is not the only area these misguided know-it-alls reside. Although the industry certainly has more than its fair share (even though study after study confirms that a company is only as successful as its weakest skill) it is prevalent in every field. On the other hand, there are many more folks who are far from insufferable know-it-alls. They actively seek counsel, but sometimes simply dont know where to begin, who to contact or the right questions to ask! I experienced this firsthand as I began working on my website, (www.StrategicMarketingAdvisors.com). Tip I had no delusions that I was an expert in Internet marketing right from the start no problem. Yet, as I learned more about the process, I became more and more panicked. Cyberspace jargon is like a foreign language to me and the more I tried to do myself, the more lost I became. And it wasnt as though I did want the help! Quite the contrary but I was so lost that I didnt even understand what I really needed, let alone who to contact! Gratefully, I used my tried-and-true methodology and baby-steps process and found a wonderful coach who made all the difference! The philosophical concept is not difficult to grasp but identifying our own level of incompetence is another story all together. Like most things it begins with an open mind and heart; insatiable curiosity; careful research and a very large mirror! And what makes it even more challenging is the opposite fact There are many marketing strategies and tactics that even a beginner can use successfully. Im not suggesting that you hire an expert for everything! However, you must first learn one from the other. Its like trying to save a few bucks by changing your cars oil yourself Now this is not an overly complex task, and one even I can manage. But is it a smart thing to do? Think about whats involved you drive to the store; wait in line; ask questions; look at the merchandise; select the oil, pan, funnel; wait in line to check-out; pay the cashier $24.97; drive back home; try to jack up the car so you can get underneath it to put the pan in place; undo the screw; get some oil in the pan; get most of the oil on you; get the funnel and fill it with the new oil; figure out what to do with the old oil; close everything down; throw your oil-laden shirt in the trash; and take a shower. The cost? $24.97 in stuff; $1.32 in gas; $25.00 ruined shirt; 3.25 hours of your time; and $1,000,000 in frustration All this, when you could have had it done for you for $25.00!! Lesson learned: Know whats best left in the hands of professionals. Low cost is not always best cost! Oh, and by the way, never try to hang your own drywall either! Trust me on this one. However, there are times when doing it yourself is smart! If youve got better than average computer skills or design talents its easy to create things like business cards, letterhead and bill stuffers but please, unless youre an ad buyer by trade, do not buy, book or design any media (especially TV and radio) by yourself! Date That Woman You Always Dreamed, Not Just The Next One Available!

First of all, if you’re going to meet a woman, you have to know how to start a conversation with her. This is basic. There’s just no way around it. You must engage her in some manner, and the easiest, and most obvious, way is to talk to her. But this is not easy for many men. We all have been in the classical situation where you see a really beautiful woman that you want to meet, and then suddenly your brain goes on vacation and you simply can not think of a single thing to say. And then, before you know it, the moment has passed, the opportunity is gone, and the woman you wanted to meet is now gone, and you may never see her again. Sometimes you may be able to think of something to say to her, but the conversation quickly fizzles out and the girl moves on, leaving you feeling like a complete loser. It is an unavoidable fact that being able to quickly engage a woman in a conversation dramatically increases your ability to get her on a date. This is because by having a conversation you are creating rapport and comfort with her, which are the necessary building blocks of human relationships. In short without rapport and comfort, there is no way you can get a girl to give you a serious commitment to see you again. The great difficulties many men have with talking to women comes from the fact that they simply don’t know what to say to a woman to get a conversation started with them. There exists an interesting concept called the “Opener.” This is a line you can use to start a conversation with a woman and that has the ability to lead into a larger conversation that with lead to more interaction with her. It’s something like a catalyst for every interaction you’ll have with a girl. It is always recommend that you have 3 openers memorized and ready to go, so that once one runs its course, you have two more ready to go to carry on that conversation. A good Opener it is always something that can be relatively open-ended, and can be transformed into different conversations. Just find something the woman says to latch onto and use that to relate to her. Start talking about that one topic until the conversation starts to flow. And if one conversation runs its course, you can stack another opener to start a new conversation. For instance, a good follow-up to this opener is: “So, do you like kids?” After she answers, ask her why is it she feels that way. Then talk about your views on kids. Eventually, the conversation will be flowing, and before you know it, it’s time to ask for her number and set up a date. It is vitally important you develop this skill, otherwise you will have an extremely hard time meeting women and getting them to go out with you. A clerical worker at the New York State Insurance Fund pilfered office files and used stolen identities (of people across the country as well as fellow office workers) to obtain goods and services. A phlebotomist at Kaiser Permanente admitted to using the personal information of patients and employees in order to open credit card accounts in various names. Recently, an FTC investigation into a work-at-home scheme spawned an incredible “scam-within-a-scam” when a man pretending to be an FTC employee emailed hundreds of the scam’s victims. He requested personal information stating that it was to be used as evidence in the case. While it’s impossible to completely eliminate the chances of becoming a victim, you can minimize the risk by putting the following to practice: –If a would-be employer asks you for any personal information you should ask them for their contact information and then separately look up the company’s information and contact them to verify that they actually exist. While it’s not unusual for an employer to ask for certain work-related information (like your work history and former employers), it is not appropriate for them to ask for personal information (like a social security number) unless you are actually being hired (and you’ve checked them out to make sure they’re legitimate). Even then, you should never be asked for financial information such as a credit card number. –On online resumes, never include your social security number and keep even your work history brief. –Check your credit card statements often. Believe it or not, many people never even check them! –Be sure to follow up with creditors if your bill doesn’t arrive on time. A missing credit card bill may mean that an identity thief has changed your billing address to cover their tracks. –Order your credit report from one of the major credit bureaus each year and verify that everything is correct. What to do if you’ve been a victim of identity theft: The FTC maintains Consumer Sentinels Identity Theft Data Clearinghouse, the nations repository for identity theft complaints. The FTC established the Identity Theft Toll-Free Hotline, 1.877.IDTHEFT (1.877.438.4338) and the ID Theft Website (www.consumer.gov/idtheft) to give identity theft victims a central place to report their problems and receive helpful information. The Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C). How To Say You’re Sorry And Make It Mean Something

By Gregg Hall Ever been in trouble with your wife or girlfriend? Of course you have, if you have known each other any time at all! We can’t help it, as guys we always do something or say something without thinking that upsets our significant other. Saying you are sorry can get you of the doghouse when you’ve done this but only if she really believes you are sincere and remorseful. If she thinks that you are just apologizing to take advantage of the incredible make up sex, you will be in hotter water than you were before you started! One of the things that shows sincerity and remorse better than anything is action. What I mean by that is making a conscious effort not to repeat the same offense again. If you find yourself apologizing time and time again for the same offense not only does it show a lack of remorse but also shows that you really don’t care about what upset her. If you know the exact reason she is upset, then apologize for that exact thing. Just saying you are sorry without knowing the reason is not only insincere but also sets you up for repeating it because you don’t know what it is you need to avoid doing or saying. If you really have no idea, humble yourself and ask her what you did to upset her, tell her you’re an idiot for nor realizing but you really want to know because you don’t want to do it again. Don’t ever apologize by phone if you can do it in person and never do it with a message or an email. Again, this kind of cold and removed apology shows a lack of sincerity and doesn’t demonstrate that you are truly sorry for what you did. Take the time and effort to meet personally so that you can show how sorry you are and try to make amends. If you want to go down in flames, go ahead and blame her for the situation while you are apologizing. I know that a lot of times the problem may have been contributed to by her, but the issue here is your apology. If you have a decent woman, she will reciprocate with an apology as well as long as you do it the right way. The only way to have your apology accepted as being sincere is to accept total responsibility. Don’t allow too much time to pass either, if you apologize promptly it will be better accepted than if you wait and she thinks you are simply apologizing to get back in her good graces as an afterthought. On the other hand, if you are having an argument and you try to apologize in the heat of the moment it is likely to fall on deaf ears because she will not hear what you are trying to convey.
